Lots of us have complicated feelings around course evaluations. Instructors sometimes feel that the feedback they receive is not constructive. Students sometimes don't understand their purpose or take them seriously. But when done properly (alongside other methods of feedback and reflection), evals can be one of the most important tools instructors have to reflect on and continuously adapt and improve their teaching. They can also be useful tools for students to reflect on their learning, and what works for them and what doesn't.

Check out the teaching guide for more on how to:

  • talk to your students about course evaluations and encourage constructive feedback
  • ask useful questions and know how to make sense of the data
  • pair evals with other forms of feedback and reflection like mid-term surveys and informal conversations

Genuine, authentic feedback from our students is valuable!
