Course Type Definitions

Face-to-Face / In-Person / On-Campus

All instructional class sessions of a course will take place on our campus, 9501 S King Drive, Chicago, IL 60628.

Web-Based Course / Online Course

An online course is conducted entirely over the internet using Moodle. Instructors and students actively use Moodle to complete the various components of the course. These courses can be in the following modalities: (a) Asynchronous 鈥 where students are not required to be available at a specific time on a regular basis or (b) Synchronous 鈥 the classes meet through Elluminate or similar software at regularly scheduled times; however, the student does not come to campus.

Hybrid (Blended) Course

Course materials include a significant amount of electronic materials/activities provided online through Moodle. Class sessions include a limited number of scheduled sessions on campus, as well as a significant number of sessions comprised of online activities and interaction with no requirement to physically be on campus. Students are required to actively use the course management system to complete the various components of the course.

Enrollment Status

What constitutes full-time, three quarter-time, and half-time enrollment? Please review the two charts below:

Undergraduate Students: 

Fall & Spring Semesters Summer Session
Full-time = 12+ credit hours Full-time = 7+ credit hours
Three-quarter time = 9 - 11.9 credit hours Three-quarter time = 6 - 6.9 credit hours
Half-time = 6 - 8.9 credit hours Half-time = 4 - 5.9 credit hours
Less than half-time = 1 - 5.9 credit hours Less than half-time = 1 - 3.9 credit hours

Graduate Students:

Explanation of the Schedule of Classes

The schedule of classes lists all course information available at the time of publication.

Course Information

The course subject/discipline information, including the subject code, department office location and telephone number, are provided in the heading at the beginning of each subject listing. Classes are listed alphabetically by discipline beginning with on-campus courses, followed by hybrid, Intersession, online and special session courses.

The most current course information is available via 海角社区 X-Press. Changes to course offerings are also noted in the weekly addendum posted to the course schedule web page. All fees, dates, courses, and instructors are subject to change.

Schedule of Classes Publication Timeline

Summer and Fall Terms: by the third Friday of March

Spring Term: by the third Friday of October

excerptCourse offerings in the Schedule of Classes are identified by Course Reference Number (CRN) or by subject code, course number, and section number. 

CRN

Each class has a unique five-digit Course Reference Number (CRN) used as the key identifier of the course. During the spring term, each CRN begins with the number one (1) or the number two (2) 

SUBJ

This is the four-letter subject code for the given discipline. 

CRSE

This is the course number for specific discipline/subject. The course number indications the level of the course, as well.

SEC

The section number is a 2- or 3-character identifier of a specific course offering. The section number can identify the when and how a course is facilitated.

01 鈥 19 Class meetings start before 4pm M, T, W, R, or F
21 鈥 29 Hybrid course meeting at any time
51 鈥 59 Online course meeting asynchronously or synchronously
61 鈥 69 Class meetings start 4pm or later M, T, W, R, or F; or anytime on Saturday or Sunday

3rd Character 鈥 I or S or R

If the section number has a third character 鈥泪,鈥 this indicates that the section meets during the Intersession period as part of the Spring semester. If the third character is 鈥沦,鈥 this indicates that the section meets during a special session for a given term. If the third character is "R," this indicates that the section is for our RISE program. The meeting dates will be indicated in the section comments found below the course title.

 

DAYS

The days in which courses will meet are listed in the Schedule of Classes indicated by a single letter:

Monday 鈥 M / Tuesday 鈥 T / Wednesday 鈥 W / Thursday 鈥 R / Friday 鈥 F / Saturday 鈥 S / Sunday 鈥 U

Courses meeting multiple days will appear with the corresponding combination of letters for each day the course meets. For example, a course that meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays will have TR listed for the meeting days.
